credited obamacare to help create jobs. if you look at what is happening here in washington and all of the headwinds and problems, the shutdown of the government it is really remarkable to see these numbers considering everything that was stacked against it. ut you are right, even as the economy improves, 3.6% growth in the gdp, and the white house is making the case things are good, they are not good enough, we need to extent those unemployment benefits that are set to run out now for more than a million beneficiaries. jay carney spoke to that. >> the news we have today reinforces that we need to address this problem and to extent those unemployment insurance benefits to those individuals, because this is a persistent problem. it would be terrible to tell more than a million families across the country just a few days after christmas, that they are out of benefits. so we hope congress be address this challenge. >> again gridlock, there are many who are saying enough is enough. the economy is improving, we're not going to extent the benefits again >> we will find out soon, okay. mik

insurance web site is working much better. this week 29,000 americans enrolled on the obamacare site in the first 24 hours after it was repaired. that is more than signed up in the entire month of october when healthcare.gov flopped in its debut. major garrett is following this. >> reporter: dawn erin of austin, texas, is one of the americans who signed up for health care this week. it's the first health insurance the self-employed musician and massage therapist has had in 20 years. >> this is obviously a massive undertaking and it's just started so it's a beautiful idea in theory. we'll see as the year progresses if it works out in practice. but i have my fingers crossed. i'm hopeful about it. >> reporter: erin tried to enroll in october but web site problems bogged her down. this time, an enroll. counselor helped heifer settle on a plan with a $89 premium. she qualifies for a subsidy of $162 a month. >> i was surprised at the prices, actually. we entered all my tax info and income and stuff and i was pleasantly surprised. >> reporter: erin is 43 and has had some recent health issue

"we need you to wait" the site advised "so we can make sure there's room for you." it was her third attempt at signing up. >> very frustrating for me because i need insurance so badly and it seems like something in the system or something is not working. >> reporter: the "need you to wait" prompt is a new feature of healthcare.gov. when the system is overloaded, it puts applicants in a queue and promises an e-mail when it's their turn. but despite promise it is web site could handle 50,000 users at the same time, the queuing system was turned on today at approximately 35,000 users. officials said they had to maximize the smooth user experience of those who applied first. there are also potential problems for the thousands who have signed up for new plans. officials are just now building the system for how insurance companies will be paid and the companies say their enrollments are slow because of bad information coming from the government. robert zirkelbach is with america's hea
